The Teko DAS provides wireless coverage for commuters and businesses in Roma Termini

Liverpool, NY, November 5, 2015 - JMA Wireless, a global leader of wireless communications solutions, is enabling robust wireless communications in Italy’s largest railway station, Roma Termini.  In conjunction with its integration partner, Telektra S.R.L., the Teko DAS (Distributed Antenna System) from JMA Wireless was deployed to ensure cellular coverage and capacity for its millions of commuters every year and the 100 plus businesses located throughout the station. 

For many years the cellular coverage in the Roma Termini Railway Station was very spotty and unreliable.  When carriers recently invested in LTE, the station realized a wireless system needed to be installed to support this new technology.  Cellular coverage and capacity was necessary in and around the station, from the underground train platforms to the outside taxi area.  Passengers want to communicate for work and personal reasons.  In addition, the Roma Termini Station needed to ensure cellular communications for its 100 plus shops, post office, travel agency and other types of businesses located in the facility.

“Once LTE gained traction in the marketplace, the team at Roma Termini Station knew it needed a system to support robust cellular coverage, and they needed it now,” stated Mirko Borgna, Operations Director at Telektra.  “Within two months we installed the Teko DAS from JMA Wireless.  This solution is not only flexible and cost effective, but it is also future proofed.  Going forward Roma Termini will be able to leverage the Teko DAS to support new wireless technologies easily.”

The Teko DAS is a multi-band, multi-carrier modular solution, which provides cellular coverage and capacity for indoor and outdoor environments.  One of its main components, the rack mounted Master Unit (MU), combines different high speed wireless technologies, such as LTE and UMTS, with multiple bands to serve the various needs of a client.  Only a single optical fiber cable is necessary to simultaneously distribute multiple frequency bands and multiple carriers from the Master Unit to one or more Remote Units (RUs) ranging in power from very high to low.  These RUs can be located in-building or outside.  The amount of optical fiber needed to support the Teko DAS is 50 percent to 75 percent less than competitive offerings in the market today, making it an extremely cost efficient solution.

In order to meet Roma Termini’s goal of achieving the same level of cellular service throughout, Telektra deployed the Teko DAS using a star topology.  From the rack mounted Master Unit (MU) a single fiber cable trunk was deployed with several branches spreading to 22 pairs of Remote Units – 10 high power and 12 low power. Only one fiber per RU was installed, resulting in only 5.5 kilometers of total fiber being deployed.  A total of 65 antennas were installed inside and outside of the facility.  The system consists of 12 sectors covering GSM, UTMS and LTE technologies.
